For me, this is one of the easiest things to do to make a huge difference. In our kitchen, we have a separate bin just for recyclables located right beside the trash bin. From the young age of 2, both of my kids have participated in our efforts to recycle everything we can. To this day, if they have a question about whether something can be recycled, we discuss and educate our kids. </span><br /><br />I know it may take a bit of time to learn what all can be recycled, but I believe a little investment of time to acquire the knowledge has a big payoff. I always keep a "cheat sheet" beside our bins so I can refer to it quickly to find the answer to a questionable item.<br /><br />So, I know there are still skeptics out there who believe they can't make a difference or don't want to make the effort but I hope these simple facts can shed some light and motivate everyone to recycle every day!!! </div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 277px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510134361412838386" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRcGrecDSuw7Gs8ns3fG2MkdbvT3BiYRr2pLXcvoo4oFLv8jjpt1MBIrUt47PkngwB7Una-xiLFxmwCsL7xb9HAGc2DAdgLe5g8xTfsucQjSQJMN0-THn-WfKHBv-jmEpMRa2R8f3Mnz5T/s320/Learn-to-Recycle-Activity-Kit.jpg" /><br /><div><span style="color:#3333ff;"><strong>Here are some interesting facts about plastic milk jugs:</strong></span></div><br /><p>1 lb of recycled milk jugs = the energy equivalent of 3,000 AAA batteries<br />1 lb of recycled milk jugs = the electricity needed to power a TV for 3 whole weeks<br />1 lb of recycled milk jugs = the electricity needed to keep your laptop up and running for a month</p><p><strong><span style="color:#3333ff;">Recycling Facts:</span></strong> </p><p>*Every 90 days a recycled aluminum can makes its way back on the shelf as something useful.<br />*80-100 years: that's the lifespan of an aluminum can that gets tossed into the trash instead of a recycling bin.<br />*700 years: that's how long a trashed plastic bottle will sit in a landfill taking up space and refusing to degrade.<br />*1 Million Years: Put a glass bottle in a landfill and that's how long it'll sit there doing nothing. </p><p><strong><span style="color:#3333ff;">Products Made from Recycled Bottles and Cans:</span></strong></p><p><span style="color:#cc0000;">PLASTIC</span><br />T-shirts: Fourteen 20 oz. plastic bottles yield enough fiber for an extra large T-shirt.<br />Carpet: It takes fourteen 20 oz. plastic bottles to make one square foot of carpet.<br />Fleece Sweater: It takes sixty-three 20 oz. plastic bottles to make a sweater.<br />Jacket Fiberfill: Fourteen 20 oz. plastic bottles yield enough fiberfill for a ski jacket.<br />Sleeping Bag Fiberfill: It takes eighty-five 20 oz. plastic bottles to make enough fiberfill for a sleeping bag. </p><p><span style="color:#cc0000;">GLASS</span><br />Glassware<br />New glass containers<br />Decorative home décor<br />Fiberglass Insulation<br />Tile </p><p><span style="color:#cc0000;">ALUMINUM</span><br />Picture frames<br />Decorative home décor: Bowls, vases, etc.<br />Baseball bats </p><p align="center"><span style="color:#33cc00;">"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,</span></p><p align="center"><span style="color:#33cc00;">Nothing is going to get better. In one of my previous posts, you will see that we started our own compost in our backyard this summer using an old plastic trash bin with a lid. It has worked fabulously. I love the fact that I am reducing the waste I send to the landfill and recycling matter back into the earth.<br /><br />One thing I have been researching is getting a decorative kitchen composter that I can have out on my counter so I'm not stacking food waste in a bowl on my counter. I discovered a company in Fort Worth that sells eco-friendly products called "<em><span style="color:#009900;">The Greener Good</span></em>." I've also discovered a lot on Amazon.com as well. They have many different versions including those made from ceramic, stainless steel, bamboo, and plastic. So, a wide range of personal preference can be accomodated.<br /><br />Some pictures of the kitchen composters that "<em><span style="color:#009900;">The Greener Good</span></em>" sells:<br /><p align="center"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510124538183747634" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXfgWBNktqQVfYSxbjaWyLpLJkxsSxpY120I3deTRCgLxbfdBB_UAhJy8qqcy8WfA2npdKm6wL_zEc2LNeMdOqdWWU20aPQve5tcgK3Po-Lla5w1DwVTYpoW-PYEZ9Lg0t-d0FnWblJdX7/s320/white-compost-open-1-1244076475.jpg" /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510124542697749410" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF_CtLIa6SUP7HBIqyKINSFkYUrZ5Q6CWiZYz7SXmfzha9t_-yzL-Jp-5rnHBhmWYX6W_VrChLtwPSKwdivk1khWtbPg8x3a7xaFORmGtOEZLuenySTRnbnGdGCkORQWlqolD5k7o9huXl/s320/stainlesssteelcompost-1-1262285532.jpg" /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510124547417595970" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaZaW7Ub99zRPh3v3pkLF8QnBLIts2AFn4SYlF_AXnfwp16IafjJiJX4-rJ-X8KSgKHL7kTaI1IUK5IRU6I_8D51xbAE74z8tDR_qwaiFELpX29mzfTIUkfe5htRR6pCYnk78u7cfA_rqN/s320/bamboocompost-1-1262285510.jpg" /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510124550173272210" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkN2hOLaBI9l32Ejj53SlRxk9VUZ40EdXJBWIVkO0tFRc9j8IUscrf5mQnAX0UZ6tQE9jP6wID1b3kXVTCdL7Qlg_1h4Udsai5vUm3-Fv7At5DUGLyxHwcaHoZFwIB7atD1Q2QG-ksFVob/s320/SQUARECleanAirGardeningCompostingKit-1-1243794165.jpg" /><span style="color:#33cc00;">"Methinks my own soul must be a bright invisible green." </span></p><p align="center"><span style="color:#33cc00;">~Henry David Thoreau</span><br /></p>Green Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17078077892663340616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4024957259467628786.post-11419011359262396822010-08-03T20:28:00.001-05:002010-08-03T20:29:03.384-05:00Recycle Every Day! - REsale Therapy<table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="color:#ffffff;"><p>One of the first points Wallace points out in her book<br /><em><span style="color:#009900;">Recycle Every Day!</span></em> is, "Passing along clothes in good condition to others is a form of recycling." <p></p><p>I was so fortunate to find such a great deal on school uniforms for my daughter. Missouri is SO beautiful with their very distinct 4 seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter. I can't say I can narrow my favorite season down to one as they all have their own beauty but Summer has to be one of my favorites due to its "greenness." Curious, I searched online for a definition for the word hero and saw this. "<em><span style="color:#33cc00;">A hero is anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem</span></em>." I often think of heros as people who save other people from danger. When I saw this definition, however, I guess I can see how my passion for educating children and parents about taking care of ourselves and our planet could be seen as courageous. I face the problems of unhealthy living and environmental issues, and I show people how we can educate ourselves about the little steps we can take to make a huge difference!</p><p>The nervousness in my voice during the interview may not sound courageous but, nonetheless, I am anxious to hear the broadcast of the interview tomorrow, <span style="color:#6600cc;">July 16th, at 7:50am and 4:50pm</span>. I will be able to access a link to the interview online after it airs so I can post it. Between wrapping up my end of the year classroom things and starting my position as Children's Ministry Assistant at our church, I have been quite a <span style="color:#ff9900;"><strong>busy little bee</strong></span>! <p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481152122299022274" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFECbBMGzbBbtjLyBUxTYWMlG1B8jLLd3NJrU4d5CFeGBmo7n4UBhTTsZeP85RsBukDsWvStwE0AlGLEHCF8x0r_fWH1qQZhe_KSK1-iVdMatmnFy0jfYPLzELrWTP1rWKw1f7wigwiwJW/s320/bee.jpg" /></p><p>As you know, I love nature! Planting and nurturing trees is one of my favorite hobbies and probably the reason my neighbors refer to me as "<span style="color:#009900;"><strong>The Tree Lady</strong></span>." I was given this tree at the Haltom City Arbor Day Celebration. They are so beautiful and green! They enrich our lives in so many ways!<br /><br />Their beauty and color improve the environmental aesthetics, and they clean our air by filtering pollution and producing oxygen. They are magnificient living organisms!<br /><br /><em><span style="color:#ff6600;">God is the experience of looking at a tree and saying, "Ah!"</span></em><br /><em><span style="color:#ff6600;">- Joseph Campbell</span></em><br /><br />I presented at a local Arbor Day Celebration today and was, once again, reminded of the beauty of nature. Sunny skies, budding trees, and cool spring winds make me so happy!<br /><br />Imagine my sense of pride during the planning stages of coordinating 2 separate tree planting programs in my neighborhood when I was adoringly referred to as "<span style="color:#009900;">The Tree Lady</span>." I met over 80 of my neighbors and love the sense of community that planting trees provided.<br /><br />In honor of Arbor Day Celebrations all over the world, I'd like to share this poem.<br /><br /><div align="center"><span style="color:#3333ff;">Breath<br /></span><em>by J. I've never been much of a shopper but I do enjoy going to local craft shows to get ideas of things I can make by either sewing, painting or iron-on transfers. Here are some ideas to make personalized gifts that your loved ones will never forget!<br /><br />This first idea I got from one of my high school friend's moms who made it for her kids. What a GREAT way to reduce waste (wrapping paper) by making these huge, monogrammed Christmas cloth gift bags. Looks like Santa delivered them himself!<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401737443429542482" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ0H-3y6IB4zUmIz2xJ6RdZe8J5R7wcbt5LXkUZEa0-giUlnpm0qkTy4UL2Sw_GhvqVeKaqtDxhI3cvSzcBQf1siiMiK_FYUYj8KXHOPWMxYNqmIPINSrn5rqibeLG65RuecZX789skklO/s320/cloth+gift+bags.jpg" /><br />My family always enjoys the personalized calendars I make them each year with all the birthdays and anniversaries listed. I also make sure to get a family picture each year when we are all together so that I can include that picture as well. (I had to do a little photoshop work to put a missing family member in the picture but it worked!)<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 295px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401730061967128434" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6vov-XYYk-wlt-_yN5OJLL9my5hbDKIVxZAfmnntlymePoVZ3FGxq6lxuGrRwE54v2psuboEkVIfDUrjV-1IFRrgXzl3Zmi2RCidhZl3Sdgjao1lysuLGNylvJ9hCi07MVIR2WD0uHBJp/s320/calendar.jpg" /><br />One year, I made different versions of these crosses for each of my friends. I've searched high and low for ways to reduce waste and send a positive message to parents and kids about simple ways they can reduce their footprint on our beautiful Earth.</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">Here are some tips I have formulated over the last few years. </span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">Before the party:</span><br /><ul><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Send out <span style="color:#009900;">paperless party invitations</span> through </span><a href="http://www.evite.com/"><span style="font-family:verdana;">www.evite.com</span></a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> (personalize with your child's own pictures);</span></li><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Ask that party guests bring a <span style="color:#009900;">cash donation</span>, instead of bringing wrapped gifts. Explain in the Evite that half the money will go to a <span style="color:#009900;">charity</span> and the other half will go to <span style="color:#009900;">one special gift</span> for the birthday child. This has worked out perfectly ever since I started a few years ago. The one special gift we have always gotten my girls is an activity class, like gymnastics, tennis, acting, etc. It really does teach a wonderful lesson of serving others and not being consumed with a ton of unnecessary toys; </span></li><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Support local, small business owners (embroiderer & sewer) by having themed <span style="color:#009900;">CLOTH napkins</span> embroidered with kids’ initials that can replace paper napkins & serve as party favors for kids to use in school lunch box;</span></li></ul><p><span style="font-family:verdana;">During the party:<br /></p></span><ul><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Use solid colored <span style="color:#009900;">CLOTH tablecloths</span> that can be washed & reused;</span></li><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Use <span style="color:#009900;">reusable dinnerware</span> (plates, bowls, forks, spoons) that can be washed & reused - look in the dollar bins at grocery & craft supply stores; </span></li><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Recycling the rinsed out SOLO cups or recycling the Capri Sun pouches is great but why not take it a step further and use <span style="color:#009900;">reusable plastic cups</span> (like what you get at restaurants for kids); </span></li></ul><p><span style="font-family:verdana;">After the party:<br /></p></span><ul><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Instead of a plastic bag of <span style="color:#009900;">party favors</span> that end up in the landfill, send home a <span style="color:#009900;">gift card</span> for a free ice cream cone from a local eatery (along with the cloth napkins)</span></li><li><span style="font-family:verdana;">Send out <span style="color:#009900;">paperless thank you cards</span> through </span><a href="http://www.smilebox.com/"><span style="font-family:verdana;">www.smilebox.com</span></a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> detailing how much money was raised and how much fun your child enjoyed sharing their birthday with their friends & family. I love to include a picture of all the party guests as well.</span></li></ul><p><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Here are a few very helpful websites as well:</span></p><p><a href="http://www.greenpartygoods.com/"><span style="font-family:verdana;">http://www.greenpartygoods.com/</span></a></p><p><a href="http://www.greenplanetparties.com/"><span style="font-family:verdana;">http://www.greenplanetparties.com/</span></a></p><p><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Do you have any other ideas? "The ecological crisis is in every way a crisis of education." Calling on a tradition that stretches from Plato to John Dewey, Orr insists on defining good education not simply as mastery of subject matter but also as cultivation of values. "Education," he writes, "[has] to do with the timeless question of how we are to live." </em></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;color:#009900;"><em>"Ecological Literacy" will certainly be of great use to teachers and other educators, but it is equally important for parents to read it. It is about time that this pedagogy got into our schools. As Orr has pointed out repeatedly in recent speeches, the ability to live more sustainably on the earth is no longer technically beyond us. It can be done. It takes the will and persistence to do it. And schools are a proper place to begin. </em></span></div><em><span style="font-family:Verdana;color:#009900;"></span></em><div align="center"> </div><div align="center"><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">We really can change the world! </span></div><div align="center"><span style="font-family:verdana;">By empowering our children, being genuine in our effots and being good role models, we can develop and nuture a world of caring individuals.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">The world is in our hands!!</span></div><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSYt7iXKqmU1l9b_DcTwW8AJRGDd63DphOSHjx_ar6cP5hMcBBwvp47U9SNJUjnHD4AIQ7-ib2C3-Rcyd9LhSwZXkbHIkKa9IqLx01NnVu9YFEw0b4pBOg6zUWxIksTqzIXC97r9uYsOX9/s1600-h/kids_can_change.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366884844310466754" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSYt7iXKqmU1l9b_DcTwW8AJRGDd63DphOSHjx_ar6cP5hMcBBwvp47U9SNJUjnHD4AIQ7-ib2C3-Rcyd9LhSwZXkbHIkKa9IqLx01NnVu9YFEw0b4pBOg6zUWxIksTqzIXC97r9uYsOX9/s320/kids_can_change.jpg" /></a>Green Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17078077892663340616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4024957259467628786.post-66876895456222695462009-08-05T16:21:00.001-05:002009-08-16T19:31:06.895-05:00I finally did it!<span style="font-family:verdana;">I have been encouraged by many friends to start up a blog to share my ideas for <span style="color:#009900;">"going green" from the inside-out</span>. Although I don't feel I am an expert on the topic, I try my hardest to learn and teach what we can do to keep ourselves and our Earth beautiful and clean. </span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;">About a year ago, I came into contact with a City employee whose mission it was to continue the <span style="color:#009900;">Environmental Education</span> program that no longer fit in the budget. So, I added additional volunteer appearances for <span style="color:#009900;">"Recycle Girl"</span> in local schools and started spreading my message. </span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;">When that same City employee nominated me as Volunteer of the Month for <span style="color:#009900;">Keep Texas Beautiful</span> on my birthday this year, I took it as a sign that I needed to jump start a career. On a very long Sunday, I taught myself video editing and put together a short film giving an example of what my lessons/performances are like. </span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;">My short term goal is to get federal grants to perform for different school districts across Texas. My long term goal is to sign on with a network to do short commercial-type lessons on kids' programs. </span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Verdana;">I'm currently working on revising my video...more to come soon!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">My dear childhood friend wrote the following on her blog. </span><a href="http://praiseworthythings.blogspot.com/2009/08/being-good-stewards-recycle-girl.html"><span style="font-family:verdana;">http://praiseworthythings.blogspot.com/2009/08/being-good-stewards-recycle-girl.html</span></a>Green Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17078077892663340616noreply@blogger.com2
